These are some pics of the township close to us called Soweto. (South Western Townships). Hundreds of thousands of rural South Africans moved to Joburg to work in the gold mines and they were forced to live in townships. Nearly two million people, mostly black, live in Soweto. There are 1.4 million orphans in SA and a huge percentage of them live here. They have usually lost their parents to HIV AIDS or poverty. Many of the missionaries that come to us have lost their parents to AIDS. I've heard that there is about 40% unemployment in Soweto.

Nelson Mandela lived in Soweto before being jailed for 23 years in 1961.

The Twin Towers that you see in the top pictures used to provide electricity to Joburg's white suburbs while Soweto went without. Today they bungee swing between them and also bungee jump inside of them.

  1. Your collages turned out well. You will be able to make them bigger but I'm thinking you will need to adjust the width of your blog in order to make them fit. Let me know if you want to do that and I'll tell you how.

  2. Would love to know how to adjust the width! Do you charge by the hour or one lump sum at the end??? :)

  3. Wow. What a different world it is there. How sad about all of those orphans! I'm grateful for the gospel and the hope it gives us though!
